Cicadapalooza: A celebration of Cicadas coming June 8 at the Lake Geneva Public Library
Visit Lake Geneva, in partnership with the University of Wisconsin-Madison Entomology Department, is proud to announce Cicadapalooza—a fun, family-friendly, and FREE pop-up event with tours and talks by UW-Madison entomologists, cicada merchandise, food, and more!
WHEN: Saturday, June 8, 12:00 to 4:30 p.m.
WHERE: Lake Geneva Public Library & Library Park, 918 West Main Street, Lake Geneva (map)
WHY: Of all the spots in Wisconsin, Lake Geneva has one of the strongest records of periodical cicada activity, with written records dating back to 1854. Cicadas started emerging in the Lake Geneva area on May 17th, 2024 and will be present for over a month, making this a great opportunity to witness this amazing natural phenomenon.
TOURS: Guided walking tours of the Maple Park Historic District will leave at 12:30, 1:30, 2:30, and 3:30 p.m. The 45-minute walking tours, led by UW faculty and staff, and will cover approximately one mile on level terrain. A highlight of the tour is the historical Pioneer Cemetery established in 1837, which has ideal conditions for periodical cicadas.
TALKS: Dr. Dan Young, UW-Madison professor and director of the Wisconsin Insect Research Collection, and Extension entomologist PJ Liesch will offer brief talks on cicadas at the Lake Geneva public library in the afternoon around 3:15 PM. Visitors can also browse a specially curated display of books and other resource materials on cicadas inside the Lake Geneva Public Library.
BOOTHS: A number of cicada, insect, and nature-themed tables will be present for the event in and around the library. Stop by to learn about cicadas and more!
YOUR HOSTS: Visit Lake Geneva is joined by the Lake Geneva Public Library, City of Lake Geneva, City of Lake Geneva Avian Committee and UW-Madison Entomology Department (PJ Liesch, aka the “Wisconsin Bug Guy” of the UW-Madison Insect Diagnostic Lab, and Russell Groves, chair of the UW-Madison Entomology Department).
