Applications to graduate studies act as the application for financial support. Offers of financial support accompany most offers of admission for students admitted to Entomology. Most students hold research assistantships (RA’s). The availability of RA’s is limited. They carry a stipend, which is updated annually, a remission of tuition, and the option to participate in a health-care plan comparable to that available to faculty. Current stipend information and program rates are published on this pageof the Graduate School’s website. A posting of open assistantship positions within the department may also be located on the department’s Graduate Training Opportunities webpage.
International students should refer to the International Applicant Financial Information website when preparing their applications. International students should submit their financial information only after a favorable admission decision has been made.
Although paid teaching assistant (TA) appointments are not generally available in Entomology, there are many opportunities on campus to secure such a position. Students supported by TA positions should contact their advisor for a list of potential departments to contact.
In-course students are encouraged to apply for funding for their graduate education. Students and applicants are encouraged to check the Graduate School’s list of external fellowships. Although the department is committed to supporting students who continue to make good progress, there is considerable satisfaction and prestige associated with obtaining scholarships or grant support.
Graduate Fellowship, Scholarship, and Grant Opportunities
This endowed graduate fellowship provides support for an outstanding student researching key problems of insect management in vegetable crops. Contact the student services coordinator or individual faculty for more information about the application, deadline, and submission.

This award was established by the Entomology Graduate Student Association (EGSA) in memory of Karl Kinney. It provides support for graduate student enrichment, usually for costs associated with attending scientific meetings. These costs may include registration fees, travel and lodging. The current award amount is $600. The Kinney Award is administered by EGSA, which puts out a call for applications once per semester on March 1st and September 1st. Applicants will have until the first Friday of the month following the call for applications to turn in the required documents to the EGSA mailbox located in room 237.
To apply for an EGSA Kinney Merit Award you must provide the following information to the EGSA Finance Committee:
A completed EGSA Kinney Merit Award Application Form (download PDF).
A current curriculum vitae that includes, but is not limited to the following: publications (specify refereed and non-refereed), presentations (specify invited and submitted), grants (written by the applicant), awards, and professional service (specify departmental and extra-departmental).
Departmental service could include serving as a student representative on standing departmental faculty committees, holding an office in EGSA, serving on the Linnaean team, etc…
Extra-departmental contributions could include moderating sessions at professional meetings serving as a student representative on committees within a professional society etc…
Professional service could include contributions both within the department and within any given professional society.
Grants are monies to support a given research project. Recognize that some grants are called “awards.” Realize that not all graduate students are given the opportunity for grant writing and to do so requires extra initiative.
