Family Ceratocanthidae

Back to Families

The family Ceratocanthidae contains about 120 species in 10 genera worldwide, 3 species in two genera in North America. Ceratocanthids are characterized by their unique body shape which allows them to roll themselves into a little ball. Their resemblance to little pellets or seeds makes them less conspicuous to predators and may be a reason they are overlooked when collecting. Most species have been collected under bark or by beating dead tree limbs. It is believed that adults and larvae are feeding on rotten wood. The single species from Wisconsin, Germarostes aphodioides (Illiger), has been collected at light.
