Swedish Aspen (SwAsp) collection

The SwAsp collection consists of 120 genotypes of Populus tremula collected at 12 different sites (10 per site, numbers on Fig. b) over 12 degrees of latitude in Sweden. From each site roots were collected and replicates of each genotype propagated and platned in two common gardens in southern and nothern Sweden (the two arrows on Fig. b). While many different plant traits have been studied from trees in the gardens, we are currently analyzing the clones from the northern garden for phenolic glycosides using a method (Abreu et al. 2001) developed in the Albrectsen lab. Initially, nine phenolic glycosides were described from P. tremula (Fig. 1), but we are currently finding additional compounds.
